Higher education in Medea has started during the academic year of 1988-1989, in accordance with the executive decree No. 48-89 of November 4th 1989, at the administration building that hosted the National Institute of Higher Education of electrical engineering. At that time, the latter was affiliated to El Farabi middle school. The purpose was to provide higher education in the following fields:

  • Common-core curriculum in technologie.
  • Short-term training course in electrical engineering.

In July 2000, the National Institute of Higher Education was upgraded to a university center, in accordance with the executive decree No. 198-2000 of Rabie Ethani 23rd 1421, corresponding to July 25th 2000. This center consisted of four institutes:

  • The institute of science and technology.
  • The institute of economics, business and management sciences.
  • The institute of legal science and administration.
  • The institute of literature and languages.

In accordance with the executive decree No. 09-11 of Moharram 7th 1430 corresponding to January 4th 2009, establishing of the University of Medea, the number and vocation of the faculties of the University of Medea were fixed as follows:

  • The faculty of science and technology.
  • The faculty of economics, business and management sciences.
  • The faculty of literature and languages and social and human sciences.
  • The faculty of law.

In accordance with the executive decree No. 13-403 of Moharram 27th 1435, corresponding to December 1st 2013, amending and supplementing the executive decree No. 09-11 of Moharram 7th 1430, corresponding to January 4th 2009, the number and vocation of the faculties of the University of Medea were fixed as follows:

  • The faculty of literature and languages.
  • The faculty of human and social sciences.
  • The faculty of science and technology.
  • The faculty of economics, business and management sciences.
  • The faculty of law.

In accordance with the executive decree No. 16-74 of Joumada El Oula 13, 1435, corresponding to February 22 ,2013, amending and supplementing the executive decree No. 09-11 of Moharram 7th 1430, corresponding to January 4th 2009, the number and vocation of the faculties of the University of Medea were fixed as follows:

  • The faculty of literature and languages.
  • The faculty of human and social sciences.
  • The faculty of economics, business and management sciences.
  • The faculty of Law and Political Science.
  • The faculty of science .
  • The faculty of technology.
