The Wali of Medea , Mr. Djillali Doumi, alongside the Rector of the University of Medea , Professor Djaafar Bouarouri, and in the presence of the President of the Provincial People’s Assembly, members of the revolutionary community, civil, security, and military authorities, as well as the university community, presided over the official ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of National Student Day, celebrated on May 19th.
The event commenced with the laying of a wreath of flowers and the recitation of Al-Fatiha in memory of the righteous martyrs. This was followed by official addresses praising the historical role of Algerian students in both the liberation struggle and the nation-building process, while emphasizing the university’s pivotal role in shaping tomorrow’s leaders.
In this context, Professor Djaafar Bouarouri stated that commemorating this 70th anniversary serves as a crucial milestone to recall the sacrifices of the students who left their academic benches to forge the nation’s glory. He praised the current role of the Algerian university in educating a conscious and qualified generation capable of meeting future challenges, urging students to uphold the values of science and loyalty, and to continuously strive toward academic achievement and innovation.
For his part, the Wali highlighted in his speech that the historic strike of May 19, 1956, marked a decisive turning point in the Liberation Revolution, during which students joined the ranks of the struggle to defend national sovereignty and dignity. He also commended today’s students for continuing to carry the torch of knowledge and development in an independent Algeria.
The celebration also featured a historical lecture highlighting the student movement’s struggle during the Revolution. The event concluded with honoring top-performing students and winners of various scientific, cultural, and sports competitions and activities.
