Higher education in the city of Médéa began in 1988 under decree 48-89, dated November 4, 1989. The beginning was marked by the creation of the National Institute of Higher Education in Electronics and Technology, located in the former Farabi College. In its first academic year, 1988-1989, it aimed to offer higher education in the following specialties :
1 – Common-core in Technologie.
2- Short-term training in Electrotechnology.
In July 2000, the National Institute of Higher Education was upgraded to a university center in accordance with the Executive Decree No. 198-2000 dated July 25, 2000. The center included four institutes:
- Institute of Science and Technology.
- Institute of Economic, Business and Management Sciences.
- Institute of Legal and Administrative Sciences.
- Institute of Letters and Languages.
By virtue of Executive Decree No. 09-11 dated January 4, 2009, which established the University of Medea, four faculties were created with various academic disciplines, forming the core of the University of Medea:
- Faculty of Science and Technology.
- Faculty of Economic Sciences, Business Sciences, and Management Sciences.
3 -Faculty of Letters and Languages, Humanities and Social Sciences
4 -Faculty of Law.
in accordance with the Executive Decree No. 13-403, dated December 1, 2013, which amends and supplements Executive Decree No. 09-11 dated January 4, 2009, the number of faculties comprising the University of Medea and their specializations were determined as follows:
1 -Faculty of Letters and Languages.
2 -Faculty Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
3 -Faculty of Science and Technology.
4 -Faculty of Economic Sciences, Business Sciences, and Management Sciences.
5 -Faculty of Law.
By virtue of Executive Decree No. 16-74 dated February 22, 2016, which amends and supplements Executive Decree No. 09-11 dated January 4, 2009, the number of faculties comprising YAHIA FARES University of Medea and their specializations were determined as follows:
- Faculty of Letters and Languages.
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Technology.
- Faculty of Economic Sciences, Business Sciences, and Management Sciences.
- Faculty of Law and Political Sciences.
- Faculty of Science.
